SPECIAL EDITION:  In The Jesus Said Project, Jesus’ words are the focus of each post.  What makes this post unique is that it is composed almost entirely of Jesus’ words.  Jesus spoke extensively on His second coming, so what did He say?

Who is Watching for Jesus to Come Back?

Jesus said, ”Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come” (Matthew 24:42).   Only believers have confessed Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9-10, 1 Timothy 6:12), so only believers will be found keeping watch for His return.  Are you one of them?

Do We Know When Jesus Will Come Back?

”You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”  (Luke 12:40)

No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matthew 24:36)

The short answer is “No,” we do not know when Jesus will come back.

What Will the World Be Like Before Jesus Comes Back?

”Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man.  People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark.  Then the flood came and destroyed them all. It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.  But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.” (Luke 17:26-30)

According to Jesus, most people will be carrying on as usual just before He comes back.

What Will Happen When Jesus Comes Back?

In Mark 13:14-37 and Luke 21:20-36, Jesus describes a series of events beginning with the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 and ending with end time events when He returns to earth the second time.  (Note:  Read Jesus Said Flee When Persecuted for more details about the fall of Jerusalem.)  He ends with a solemn promise that these events will come to pass:

“I tell you the truth, this generation (race) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.  Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” (Mark 13:30-31, Luke 21:32-33)

What Should Jesus’ Disciples Do When He Comes Back?

”When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:28)

How Will We Know It Is Really Jesus?

”Men will tell you, ‘There he is!’, or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other.” (Luke 17:23-24)

When Jesus comes back, there will be no doubt.  We won’t have to run off and follow others to go see if it is really Him.  Everyone will see and know.

Call to Action

What are we to do while watching for Jesus’ return?  In Matthew 25:1-13, Matthew 25:14-30, and Luke 12:35-40, Jesus said we are to be wise, prepared, ready, watching, and doing His will up until the time He returns.  He also left the following detailed instructions:

Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap.  For it will come upon ALL those who live on the face of the WHOLE earth.  Be ALWAYS on the watch, and PRAY that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:34-36)

To guide your prayers regarding Jesus’ return, please read Jesus Said Pray to Escape End Time Events.  To avoid becoming weighed down and distracted as time passes here on earth, be vigilant in prayer.  Jesus knew people would tire of waiting; that is why He warned:

“What I say to you, I say to everyone:  ‘Watch!’” (Mark 13:37)
